If you fly into Yichang, you can join the upstream cruise and finish in Chongqing — a good option for combining the dam with a big-city finale.

On embarkation day, the ports are more organized than many travelers expect. In Chongqing, the terminal is at Chaotianmen Square, and cruise lines usually have English-speaking staff holding a sign with the ship name. In Yichang, the modern passenger terminal has check-in counters and shuttle buses. Either way, avoid random taxis; book a transfer through your cruise line or a reliable ride-hailing app.

Once on board, attend the daily English-language briefing at 10am. This is where the cruise director explains tomorrow’s shore excursion, marks the best viewing deck, and gives practical notes on climbing hundreds of stairs at White Emperor City. It lasts 20–30 minutes, and it’s the best way to make sure you don’t miss the highlights.

The reason I keep coming back to spring is the scenery. Qutang Gorge in the early morning is often filled with low cloud, and the steep cliffs on both sides make the Yangtze look like a narrow canyon. With blossoms scattered along the base, it’s a scene that doesn’t look real.
