Speculative fiction is a double-edged sword, warning of future dangers on the one hand, but also always suffused with the allure of the possible. Tonight’s three authors approach the unknown and unknowable in very different ways: Alexis Wright’s The Swan Book is a nightmarish fable of a time when both the natural and political worlds have come to theverge of collapse. Chen Hongyu’s stories feature younger characters negotiating the pitfalls of vaster worlds, both past and future. Catclaw San takes a more evocative approach to the psychology of the otherworldly in his speculative fiction. Joinour three authors as they introduce their respective unseen worlds, and discuss the prophetic power of fiction.

Alexis Wright is a memberof the Waanyi nation of the Gulf of Carpentaria, and her great-grandfather was from Guangdong Province. She is an author of fiction and non-fiction, and has written widely on Indigenous rights. Her novel Carpentaria, an epic novel about Aboriginal life, won five national literary awards in 2007 including Australia’s premier literary prize, the Miles Franklin Award. Her recent publication, the collective memoir Tracker (November 2017), about Aboriginal leader and political thinker Tracker Tilmouth, has been shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Non-Fiction Literary Award. Her essay, “What Happens When You Tell Somebody Else’s Story”, was awarded the Hilary McPhee Award 2016. He has been writing since 2005, and has publishednovels including Star WarBond Detective Group, nonfiction HaveDream, Will Travel, and short stories such as “Black Moon” and “Walking inthe Night with a Lamp”. His SF story “The Spring Odyssey” won the Special Judge Award for the SF genre in the 5th Douban Read Writing Competition. He strives not for wild imagination, but the pursuit of rhythm and sensation in his prose. He is often glad to be mistaken for a female writer. He works primarily in the television and film industries.
